Participate in traffic counting to improve mobility and air quality in the city

Do you live in the municipality of Eupen or Namur? Are you curious to know the quantity and speed of traffic in your street? Would you like to help your city in its choices regarding mobility and urban planning? Discover and participate in the EDIT project by installing a mini-camera in your window to analyse the traffic of cars, pedestrians, two-wheelers, etc. in your street. The Institut Scientifique de Service Public (ISSeP) would like to recruit a hundred volunteers.

The EDIT project

Along with heating, car traffic is the main source of air pollution in cities. Some pollutants coming from this traffic (fine particles, nitrogen oxides, etc.) are harmful to our health (cancers, bronchitis, etc.) and affect certain vulnerable groups more severely.

Within the framework of the Walloon Environment-Health Plan (ENVIeS Plan), the EDIT project (Intelligent Traffic Dynamics Study) led by the ISSeP aims to evaluate the impact of mobility measures and urban developments (change of traffic direction, installation of a relief car park, creation/extension of a pedestrian walkway, etc.) on both traffic and air quality, in Namur and Eupen.

The objective of the EDIT project is to provide a decision support tool to the two participating cities. This tool is intended to be dynamic with both mobility and air quality modelling.

In order to support the development of a mobility model for Eupen and Namur and to enable coherent mobility policies to be conducted, ISSeP wishes to update and increase the density of traffic counts in the two municipalities by installing 80 Telraam counting devices in Namur and 40 in Eupen for one year at the homes of interested citizens. The aim is to recruit 120 volunteers!

But what the Telraam system is?

Telraam is a light traffic observation system. It consists of a Raspberry Pi microcomputer, sensors and a very low resolution camera. It measures the traffic and its speed, as well as the distribution between pedestrians, two-wheelers, cars and heavy vehicles (trucks, buses, etc.).

The device must be fixed to the inside of a window on the first floor of a building with a clear view of the street to be observed.

It should be noted that the filmed images are not stored on the device itself and not sent to a server but processed instantly with only the counting data sent to a Telraam server. This counting data is made available to the authorities, researchers, but also to all interested citizens or actors on telraam.net. The system complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The data collected is therefore 100% anonymous (nothing allows the identification of a vehicle or a person) and cannot be used for any other purpose than traffic counting.

Registration and conditions

Please note that there are conditions to be met in order to host a traffic counting system at home. Within the framework of the EDIT project, the Telraam system requires :
- a location in the municipality of Eupen or Namur;
- a suitable home (window on the first floor, no visual obstacles, maximum distance of 15 metres between the window and the road observed)
- the presence of a good wifi connection and an electrical socket, which are essential for the system to work.

Do you meet these conditions? Register before 31 January 2022:
EUPEN -> https://telraam.net/fr/membership/issep-eupen
NAMUR -> https://telraam.net/fr/membership/issep-namur

After validation of your application, you will be invited to participate in an information and training session on the installation and use of the Telraam system.
